Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
