Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
